Elaine de Vries | elainedevries.com

I'm a third year photography student at the University of Portsmouth. When I'm finished with my course, I'm moving to Australia to pursue my passion: to be a landscape photographer. My most recent project, called 7591 Miles, looks at motion blur images of landscapes taken on 5x4 large format film to convey my past. I've lived in three different countries and although it's been a difficult experience, it has also been fantastic opportunity.

Jess Procter | cargocollective.com/jessprocter

Hello, My name is Jess Procter and I'm currently studying illustration at The London Arts. My work consists of a blend of paper cutting and collage, I have recently fallen in love with making shadows and projection. You can see it in my latest project 'Electricity where I built a shadow light lamp which rotates to cast large shadows, I cut the city out of soft wood using a laser cutter and hand painted the light bulb to get the glow affect and the turn table I built using parts of a microwave, MDF wood, a motor, and an elastic band. Here are some stills and it in motion as well. My inspirations come from old books, fairy tales, nature, castles and finding interesting objects. I hope you enjoy my work, if you wish to see more please visit my website cargocollective.com/jessprocter or my tumblr jessprocter.tumblr.com

Mariya Ustymenko | photoprojection.blogspot.co.uk

About the Artist: Mariya Ustymenko is a Ukrainian born visual artist who uses photography as her primary medium to create work ranging from live performance to installation and multimedia. She lives and works in Colchester, Essex, and is currently completing her PhD at the Department of Literature, Film, and Theatre Studies of the University of Essex.

Artist Statement: Private Places explores traditional representation of femininity as the notion confined by domestic space. The series comprises of traditionally processed film-based photographs which blur the line between fantasy and reality.

Project Background: I have started to develop this set last year when I was working on a site-specific commission for a theatre gallery aiming to produce work in response to Arthur Miller's play "A View from the Bridge." Drawing from the 1950s Hollywood iconography, I have made an attempt to create a show relating to the story of the play's protagonist, whose unrecognized emotions, triggered by the everyday domestic encounters with the subject of his forbidden desire, drive the play to its dramatic final. While working on the series, however, I have realized that for me as an artist coming from a cultural background in which emancipation in the sphere of work has brought little changes in the way women roles are viewed by the representatives of both genders, the work appears to playfully illustrate as well as subvert the portrayal of such archetypes as ‘angel in the house,’ ‘Daddy’s little girl,’ ‘mad woman’ and ‘femme fatale’, which still appear to prevail in the media discourse of contemporary advertising.

Be

My recent work entitled 'Be.' is a 35mm slide carousel projection of 80 images. What I hope to achieve within the photographic collection is to convey a sense of the great paradox at work throughout, in relation to the permanence of the images and the temporality of memory. The concrete nature of the subjects captured i.e. a building or a window frame, to the ephemeral snapshot of a reflection of light on water, provides a contrast that highlights both the fleeting character of time and the steadfastness of memory.
I have a great connection with poetry and I feel this also reflects into my work.

Arts Still Life

I love Photography because this is the medium where I can express my self with freedom. B&W, in particular, gives me more flexibility for personal interpretation. It is rich in mysteries and evokes stronger emotion. I find B&W more suitable for my type of photograph. It’s easier for me to express my emotion in monochrome because B&W is more pliable and not restricted therefore more freedom.
I follow Michael Kenna because of his minimalism style. His photographs take You to a journey and contains deep emotion. He teaches me that less is more.

Shoot Rewind Repeat

Tell us more about your featured project?
The project is based around the idea of unpredictability and chaos. The images were produced by shooting a roll of 120 film in a Lomo Holga, then rewinding the film, reloading it and shooting another set of images over the top. The hazy results are intended to represent those points in life when you cant quite pinpoint the actual time an event occurred, like if you are trying to figure out if something was a dream or not. This double exposure technique resulted in two photos of completely different and otherwise unrelated events being merged together, and this effect, coupled with the light leaks and colourful lens effects that result from shooting with a Holga, give them the chaotic dream-like feel that I was aiming for.
