Zoe Kidgell
CERAMIC DESIGNER

http://www.kidgellceramics.weebly.com

Zoe Kidgell talks to us about her recent experience of exhibiting her work at this years New Designers exhibition.

New Designers is an event that brings together graduates from across all major disciplines to showcase the next generation of design leaders, and launch their careers. Held at the Business Design Centre in London, the event is split into two parts. Part 1 showcasing from ceramics to textiles, and part 2 showcasing from visual communication to furniture design.

Zoe:
"I've recently come back from a week down in London for New Designers 2011 which has to be the best experience I've had with my work so far! Commuting there on the Monday was insane, the heat as soon as the group of us stepping off the train was near unbearable, thank God for the air conditioned stand at the Business Design Centre!

After a full day and a half setting up the stand and make sure our work looked tip-top we were all ready for the opening night on Wednesday!

I couldn't have predicted the interest and positive comments I was getting about all my work and it was very humbling and inspiring too! Finishing the show on Saturday was great... I even made my first ever sale than you to the lovely American lady moving to Hong Kong next week!"

Zoe is a recent Design Craft graduate from Staffordshire University, working with bone china and print her work shows a true talent. Her work captures a theme of tradition and nostalgia whilst tying in contemporary imagery focusing on form and pattern. From flicking through her portfolio, Zoe's passion for what she does is definitely apparent and the sort of work that will be desired by many. We would like to congratulate her for showcasing her work at the New Designers exhibition, and hope many more exciting opportunities come her way.

Leeds College of Art End of Year Show

Rosemary Milner, Surface Pattern Design, www.rosemary-milner.co.uk

From the 18th-23rd June, the Leeds College of Art end of year graduation show has been open to the public. The exhibition at Blenheim Walk, Leeds, showcases the work of third year students of a variety of different disciplines, including Graphic Design, Photography, Surface Pattern Design and Millinery, just to name a few.

In the past the exhibition has offered a glorious and inspiring variety of work, to intrigue, captivate and excite, and this year's show was certainly no different- with particularly highlights including the exceptionally high standard of the Graphic Design graduates and the playful and creative designs in the Surface Pattern studios.

The show, open for one more evening only, has certainly been another winner. The private opening, held on the evening of the 17th was a great sucess, and cemented the proof that for yet another year, the University produces truly talented graduates, despite it's modest student population.

Wentao (Marvin) Ma.
GRAPHIC DESIGNER

Wentao Ma is a young, and brilliantly talented New Media degree student, currently at the University of Leeds (...but you can call him Marvin).

Alone, Marvin's CV is impressive enough. At just nineteen years of age, he has executed a vast variety of projects and brief in various disciplines to a professional, and memorable, standard- working as an Animatior and Graphic Designer in the 2008 Bejing Olympics being one of his most notable creative achievements to date.

Fortunately, Marvin's portfolio backs up his credentials to an even greater extent- with a clearly sophisticated level of web-based design know-how, at this early stage, things are certainly looking positive for Marvin's design future.

Each design, from branding to promotional video work for charities, Marvin clearly is no "one trick pony", each design outcome being unique and poignant, sophisticated and crisp.

We certainly recommend a closer look into Marvin's work- particularly recommending the 'Tomorrow Is Another Day' animation in Vimeo- skillfull and beautiful, a truly stunning design from a truly talented designer.

The Leeds University End of Year Show

Throughout June, Leeds University have been holding their annual end of year art and design show- complete with graduate showcases through multiple disciplines including textiles, graphic design, fine art instillations, and more.
Initially complicated to find (we advise checking a map before you visit!), the exhibition is held in the Central Clothworkers building, and follows through several rooms and levels within the building.

The work was satisfyingly varied, and created to a high standard- each presentation board with a clear and distinct personality- with just a few small exhibit pieces giving a clear indication to the interests and style of the designer’s craft.

The highlights of the exhibition included the playful and charismatic designs in the textiles: surface pattern design department, with multiple wallpaper and card designs which utilised repeat pattern and illustrative design to great effect. Also, the Graphic Design department used their skills to create a good source of networking and self-promotion through business cards and printed media, which was both unique and creative.

A fun show, with plenty on offer over various disciplines. A great insight to the work to come from young creative graduates in the future.

The Leeds Met University Creative Arts Festival 2011

The Leeds Met Creative Arts Festival, held between the 9th-15th June 2011, showcased the work of more than 600 creative students from film, graphic design, architecture, landscape design, and more.

The Festival was held in Leeds’ landmark building, the Broadcasting Tower- which provides both educational and residency space to students of the University, and the city of Leeds.

Attending on the opening night, the event was filled with many fantastically interesting and inspiring pieces of work, with massive variation and interest within each of the disciplines. With a high student enrolment at the University, this provided a great body of work to be showcased to ensure the event was a real “night out”.

One of the most memorable parts of the event, along with the work itself, was an endearing feature- simple card tags which were distributed and could be hung by work sheets and instillations with quotes such as “this was memorable”, and “this took skill”- a great way to receive feedback from a wide audience.

The event was very well received, with hundreds of visitors admiring and interacting with the work. An impressive and varied selection, the graudates of Leeds Met University 2011 are certainly ones to watch.

The Hepworth Wakefield

The Hepworth Wakefield Museum, which boasts one of the finest collections of contemporary fine art in the North of England, was recently opened.

The Museum, opened to the public for the first time, is stated to be “One of the best new art galleries Britain has seen in decades” (RIBA Journal).

The collections currently exhibited include the sculptural works of Yorkshire-born Barbara Hepworth, along with the ‘Hot Touch’ exhibit by Eva Rotschild (Saturday 21st May- Sunday 9th October 2011, along with ‘Eva Rotschild: A Conversation’ held on Thursday 16th June, 6.30-8pm), as well as singular works, by artists such as Piet Mondrain, and a small exhibition dedicated to the seaside views of St. Ives.

Along with the exquisite sculptural and fine art work, there is much of interest for young designers and architects- with quotations and signage, with a crisp, lightweight typeface named ‘Hepworth Regular’ (of course), created by London-based design agency ‘A Practice for Everyday Life’, headed by Emma Thomas and Kirsty Carter.

Though perhaps what is the most notable feature of the museum is the building itself, praised by The Royal Institute of British Architects, Lecturers and student Architects alike. Designed by renowned Architect David Chipperfield, the building stands as a beacon of imposing yet elegant stature as part of the Wakefield re-generation project.

A great, and inexpensive day out for anyone, (admission to the museum is free) with a wide-variety of disciplines and aesthetics to maintain and inspire interest.
