Flora Jayne | florajaynecamcho.tumblr.com

Hello I’m Flora Jayne 22. I am currently in my Third year studying Illustration at Brighton University enjoying every minute of it and embracing the creativity that engulfs Brighton.

My work entails a story behind the concept. It is gritty and political but I like to call it ‘rough and ready’. My Process and techniques are experimenting with mixed media materials using screen-printing, photography, and drawing. I love looking at current issues that affect us in society for example class, social housing and consumerism. Grayson Perry is the biggest inspiration towards my work, as he looks at the world with an open mind and tackles taboo issues such as ‘Class’ and ‘Taste’.

Damien Barlow
PRINT MAKER // ILLUSTRATOR

http://www.damienbarlow.com

Damien Barlow, a recent graduate in BA (Hons) Surface Pattern design at Leeds College of Art specialises in paper-cuts, print and illustration.
Damien's portfolio consists of abstract, intricate and fascinating images inspired by "the depths of the ocean to outer space" with strong narrative themes a consistent feature within his work.
Along with his carefully chosen and specific approach to colour application, one of the factors that impressed us most about his work is his attention to detail...each design being cut by hand with perfect precision and (what we assume to be) the highest level of patience to achieve unique, memorable, and beautifully crafted designs- embracing a high-maintenance approach that is so often disregarded in the modern, technological age.
Damien's work is undeniably wonderfully skilled and designed; and with dedication such as his, we are sure his work will always receive the praise and admiration it deserves.

Claire Bellia
ILLUSTRATOR

http://www.clairebellia.co.uk

Claire Bellia is a recent graduate of Visual Communication at Leeds College of Art. Her distinctive and expressive style is translated through fluid brushstrokes and inks, combined with images of whimsy and quintessential femininity in traditional, handmade outcomes. As well as her ink Illustrations, Claire also experiments with mediums including printmaking, surface pattern and poster design, as well as pyrography (woodburning)- creating beautifully handcrafted brooches, our favourite being 'Ages of Womanhood', which follows the narrative of a young woman falling in love, which can be found on her online portfolio (see link above). What we love most about Claire's work is the expression and character in all of her design pieces- the handmade methods, along with the stories they tell- her work is light-hearted, humourous, but, most of all, something truly unique.

Kyle Fox
ILLUSTRATOR

http://www.killustrated.co.uk

Kyle Fox, an Illustration student at Loughborough University portfolio showcases work that is centered around tradtional printing methods with a narrative direction- bringing digitally rendered illustrations a new lease of life in exciting and varied outcomes. Kyle's work is unique and visually impressive- his illustrations crammed with fine details to keep the viewer's eye busy, yet all within a context and aesthetic appropriate to it's theme or aforementioned narrative. From his design work, we discovered Kyle's versatility in brief outcomes, each with their own disctinctive and memorable style, which really sets his illustrations apart from the crowd. What we consider to perhaps be our favourite project outcome was from the comic which Kyle screen printed onto hand made paper, in which he illustrated the narrative script 'Gummo' by Harmony Korine to a stunning effect (images shown above and below).

Gemma Brookes
http://gemmabrookes.blogspot.com
Hello Gemma, how are you feeling today?
Anxious for my University results next week, excited because of my exhibition showcasing my university work and nervous about what the future holds. But overall feeling very happy and positive.

Could you tell us a bit about your industry?
So far I have specialised in printmaking, particularly etching but I do enjoy creating pieces with textiles and painting.

What's your latest project?
I have recently finished my project for my final year at University. This project consisted of a material wall hanging and a large section of etching prints, all relating to the theme of 'the environment and how we and other things affect it'.
I am currently in the early stages of creating work for a watercolour exhibition.

What is the project you have done that you most enjoyed?
My latest University project as mentioned above, I have put an insane amount of thought and effort in to this project in order to make it a valuable and well crafted project.

Which project do you feel that you have learnt the most from?
My latest University project. From doing this I have learnt things about myself, things about world history and my views have changed on many things that I have included in this project from discovering new things from researching for it. I hope that others can also learn new things like this when they see my art.

What/Who inspires you?
From my research whilst at University two artists have inspired me the most:

Pablo Picasso, after reading Picasso Peace and Freedom and visiting this exhibition at Liverpool Tate, I learnt a lot more about Picasso's work, his themes, the issues he addresses in his art and his life and I found that he was an amazing and inspirational man and artist and he, more than anyone else inspired me to create my latest University project.

Friedensreich Hundertwasser, a painter who had similar themes in his work to mine, about protecting and valuing the environment and spreading a message about this issue through his magnificent art work.

What are your future aspirations?
I hope to get a Masters in the future and continue to make and sell my art work.

Where would you like to be in five years time?
I would like to have a Masters. Have an art related, full time job. Still be passionate about creating my art and have traveled a little.

What advice would you give to students in creative industries?
To stay positive and continue to do what you love. Don't lose sight of what makes you happy and thrive to do your best with every task you set yourself. Hard work pays off and you will be proud of yourself in the end.
